Parallel Consulting awarded NIH Phase II STTR Grant

February10th, 2018 -- SIU School of Medicine and Parallel Consulting receive NIH Phase II grant to help medical students learn clinical reasoning.

Parallel Consulting, LLC has announced the award of a $989,952 Phase II Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) to develop a medical education tool that will improve how medical students learn clinical reasoning skills. This grant continues the work funded by a Phase I STTR grant awarded to Parallel Consulting in 2014.

The research will build on Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine's decades of success with performance based clinical competency exams and will address a critical gap between education and practice in academic medicine. SIU will collaborate with Parallel Consulting to develop an "Advanced Assessment To Accelerate Diagnostic Skill Acquisition."

Many medical schools now use essays in conjunction with standardized patient exams to test medical students' clinical skills. This project will develop an application to automatically score these essays and identify reasoning failures. The application will remove the barrier of time consuming scoring and allow for the widespread use of essays in medical education.

Select medical schools will be invited to participate in a trial of the new automated medical education application in late 2018. Parallel Consulting and SIU will use the results of the trial to fine tune the application prior to release in 2019.

Parallel Consulting specializes in applied behavioral research with an emphasis on developing practical software-based solutions for real world problems. SIU School of Medicine is an international leader in medical education based in Carbondale and Springfield, Illinois.
